- January 2006: On January 18, 2006, the National Capital Region Transportation
Planning
Board (TPB) authorized a $9.6 million VDOT "study" of "spot
improvements"
along 6.5 miles of westbound I-66, between Rosslyn and the Dulles
Airport
Connector Road.

- April 2002: SB 688 passed: This requires that referenda be held in Northern Virginia in the November 2002 election on whether or not the sales tax should be increased in Northern Virginia to fund transportation projects in the area.
- October 2001: Governor Gilmore request $3.18 billion in terrorism response funds, which includes $130 million for "I-66 and Roosevelt Bridge widening." Transportation Planning Board approves a study of I-66 widening inside the Beltway AND ALTERNATIVES TO WIDENING, including a full study of the environmental (and other) impacts of widening.
- March 2001: The Northern Virginia Transportation Coordinating Council (TCC) adopts a resolution that is even more explicit about the alternatives that must be analyzed in any study of widening and the impacts of widening that must be studied.
- February 2001: VDoT submits to the TPB a proposed CLRP/TIP amendment for a "preliminary engineering study" of widening I-66 inside the Beltway. Virginia legislature approves Sen. Whipple's resolution (SJ411) that directs VDoT to study a variety of alternatives to widening I-66 inside the Beltway.
- Fall of 2000: The National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) approves comprehensive transportation plan updates (updates to the "CLRP/TIP") that do NOT include widening of I-66 inside the Beltway. The Commonwealth Transportation Board adopts a 6-year state transportation spending plan that DOES include $5 million for a "preliminary engineering" study of widening of I-66 inside the Beltway.
- Early 2000: Virginia legislature adopts transportation funding package that does NOT include widening I-66 inside the Beltway.
- December 1999: Arlington County Board adopts resolution opposing the widening of I-66 inside the Beltway. Northern Virginia Transportation Coordinating Council approves final, comprehensive "NoVa 2020 Plan," which proposes $30 billion in regional transportation expenditures over the next 20 years, but does NOT include widening I-66 inside the Beltway.
